Situated in a bushfire prone landscape in Nornalup, WA, the intention was to develop a design which could place the owners in close proximity to the highly diverse vegetation of the site. The house was designed using a ‘ground up’ approach, which followed a detailed topographical survey and collaborations with local botanists and a bushfire risk consultant. Bushfire design responses include precast verandah decking; elimination of conventional bargeboards, fascia’s and exposed timber; and dual purposing of stainless steel security screens which act as ember and radiant heat shields.
